... but she ain't messin with no broke niggers" - Kanye West
Money and material things have long occupied a strong priority in our minds. Throughout generations, humans have fought over money more than anything else. Everything else, as they saw it, land, kingdoms, warriors, weapons and women could be bought over with money...

We created it, milleniums ago, to create disparity among ourselves. Simple capitalist ideology, long before that name was termed to it. How does it affect people around us, moreso their behaviour, choices and life itself...
My intention to write this piece stems from the fact that I have seen many a subtle choice influenced by money and materials things, in my recent past. Yes, I do not deny the importance it holds. But I question the logic of the marginal difference of money over lots-of-money, and how much one's mind is attracted to the latter. I have personally seen people choose these possessions over people and not admit it for the fear of being immoral.
A BMW car, a helicopter, a page-3 life led in the polo circuit... These are some of the things that she needs, the new-age woman. After all, just an honest and righteous man is not her idea of a future anymore. Perhaps the material possessions make for a very comfortable life. Much more so than she'd like to think, much more so than she'd attribute to these things. Perhaps the choice there is different, but the basket of attributes sure does become much more attractive when they have these add-ons.
Ok, it starts off pretty innocuously. She stars off dating the guy in school who had a bike. Moves on to the guy in college who had a car. And long before she realizes it, she's already in a warp. One where she hardly realizes her fallacies. Of perhaps not going after the money, but clearly demarcating the benefits of monetary fixtures in people and creating an unwritten threshold.
Many around me have remarked, as I have, over how people that've become successful the traditional way can never compete with those that are born rich. You can never compare the conventional success of studying well, getting into a good college and landing a great job with that guy who's been roaming around in his dad's merc since he was 16. And hey, these are the people that one's gotta contend with in many games.
And it's a lost cause. They're from a different world. They don't value money or other luxuries that others do. And frankly I don't blame them. It's just their blatant lack of want of a character that's so appaling. Wooing is second nature as they dole out big bucks on people whom they hardly know. From those Cavalli sunglasses to that Davidoff fragrance that he buys for her after knowing her for 5 days, it can't but make her feel anything but wanted... Yet there are many smart(?) women I know that go on, that misattribute this to the fact that he is after all a nice guy. When they very clearly know that it is not in his big heart but in his big wallet that their attraction and attention to him lies...
I'm a firm believer of the power of money, and I consider it a necessity for a good life. However, there are those that go after people with money. Or choose not to associate with people that don't have as much. And that, to me, is being a golddigger. Frankly, money and power are alluring. So much so that it perhaps inebriates some brain cells that are supposed to be judging other important parameters about a person. But this high will not last forever, and sooner rather than later, one will find oneself glaring at an ugly mistake. And there's a good chance you're so far beyond the point of no return, that you just don't have a choice anymore...
Thanks to those few women whom I know that don't fall under this category, you've helped keep my faith...
"Money, its a hit.
ReplyDeleteDont give me that do goody good bullshit.
Im in the high-fidelity first class traveling set
And I think I need a lear jet."
-In the words of Pink Floyd.
We try to convince ourselves that hard earned money is a lot more noble and all that, but hell, I wouldn't mind some free extra money that would give me that extra edge of luxury.
Would you?
I wouldn't really flinch getting that wad of extra cash, but I wouldn't quite go for a sub-optimal choice in search of that marginal uplift in luxury...
ReplyDeleteAt the end of the day, one has to evaluate the trade-off between that extra bit of luxury and that something else you wish to sacrifice in lieu of it...
And then wonder if it's really worth it
Money is a piece of paper. But like any other piece of paper, it doesn't find himself in the dustbin.
ReplyDeleteLuckily there are still girls out there who value other things more than money. But they do look for some kind of security which is thoroughly acceptable.
U write very seriously.
